Aboyne’s Shannon McWlliam made her debut for GB and Ireland in the Junior Vagliano Trophy two-day match against the Continent of Europe at Malone Golf Club, suburbs of Belfast this past weekend.
The 15 year old was one of three Scots involved in the Vagliano and Junior Vagliano Trophy matches at Malone Golf Club who flew home on Sunday from Belfast with high hopes for the future.
Shannon McWilliam (Aboyne) and Hazel MacGarvie (Troon Ladies) were members of the GB and I team who lost the Junior Vagliano Trophy match to the Continentals but the scoreline of 10.5-7.5 was the most points the Under-16 girls had secured since this competition started in 2011.
Both Shannon and Hazel are too young to be serious contenders for placings in the Curtis Cup match in 2015 but they are improving considerably every year and promotion to the GB and I team for the 2017 Vagliano Trophy at Bologna, Italy is certainly an achievable goal.
“It was a great experience for both of us to play for a GB and I team and we have set our sights on making it into the team of the next Vagliano Trophy match,” said Shannon.
Both McWilliam and MacGarvie are in the Scotland team for the European girls’ team championhip in the Czech Republic from July 7 to 11.
