Some warm Spring sunshine quickly melted an overnight light layer of snow greeting players first thing on the Aboyne Tennis Club’s season opening day on Sunday, April 24.
A great turnout of more than 30 adults and children enjoyed some friendly tennis before the more serious Spring mixed doubles play-offs commenced at mid-day. Four pairs had qualified for the mixed doubles play-offs, from a record 14 pairs entering.
Christine Fyfe and Neil Fraser continued their strong round robin form to beat Gillian and Alan Curran in the first semi-final.
A tight match on the next court ended with Joss Marshall and Oliver Thompson edging past Anke Addy and Simon Hurst in this semi-final.
Early exchanges in a high quality final, with a good crowd of spectators, were fairly even.
However, Christine and Neil proved a more consistent pair, to open a small lead over Joss and Oliver in the middle of the match.
This ultimately proved decisive, as they sustained this advantage to take this year’s Spring mixed doubles title on their second match point.
A great day to formally kick off the new season.
