Banchory Academy was the venue for the annual Deeside Primary Schools’ badminton competition on February 23, which was hotly contested.

Pupils from local primary schools competed for the Drumoak Shield with an excellent display of badminton skills.

The Drumoak Shield was donated by the family of Brian James Chalmers in his memory to continue his badminton legacy as an ambassador for junior badminton in the area. Both singles and doubles events were played.

The singles initially was ‘pool’ based and four Banchory Primary lads won through to the boys’ semi-finals – Rafal Wilowski, Tom Findlay, Duncan Stewart and Scott Wilson.

At this stage, Rafal played Tom and Duncan met Scott. Both semi-finals provided much excitement for the spectators with some long rallies. Rafal, showing his array of shots, pulled off a 15-1 victory to gain his place in the final where he met Scott.

Scott and Duncan had a very close semi-final where both played some lovely clears and smashes, Scott eventually won 15-13.

In the final, Rafal was too strong both in execution of shot and agility and ran out champion by 15-7.

The girls’ final involved Miriam Bell (Banchory) and Amber Jaffrey (Drumoak). Both girls played their best and it was Miriam’s placement of the shot that provided her with the title 15-6. Amber, however, had shown great skill in this her first competition.

In the doubles event, all teams played each other which provided many games and proved very close with Scott Wilson and his partner, Nathan Donald, tying for top position with Eddie Grahamslaw and Max Wallace. This resulted in a play-off and after a very hard fought game, Scott and Nathan took the title of Doubles Champions with a 15-10 win.

Overall, Banchory A won the team event and were presented with the Brian Chalmers Memorial Shield. All other winners received trophies and all participants received certificates.

Organisers of the event, Joan Prieur (sports officer) and Rosie Price and Doreen Seery (badminton instructors) were delighted with the players’ efforts and thanked the players, volunteers, coaches and parents for helping make this another successful competition.
