A former Alford Academy pupil is jumping for joy after winning a prestigious competition.

Ben Anderson, who used to compete for the Banchory Athletics Club, was seeing gold in the British Masters Athletics league Triple Jump, coming first out of over 700 other athletes.

The competition was held in the Birmingham.

Ben told the Piper of his success: “ Since leaving the area I’ve lived in the South- east of England. I chose that area as it was close to work as I’m a pilot flying a VIP private jet around the world. A job I can’t imagine wanting to leave.”

Ben took a 17 year hiatus from the sport after finishing with Banchory.

“The reason for getting back into athletics was when we fly places, quite often it’s good to get out for a run to see a bit of the place you are staying. So after a while I felt a lot fitter and wondered if I could still manage the old events I used to compete in for Banchory.

“I joined Winchester
Athletics club as they
compete in the British Masters Athletics league. Anyone from 35 years old onwards is eligible to compete. They class you in five year age groups. So as a 37 year old I compete in the V35 category (35-40years old)

“Over the summer the club competed in the masters league meetings and I found my times improving to a point where fellow Athletes said I should enter the British Championships held in Birmingham 14/15 September.”

He entered the 400 meter Hurdles and the Triple Jump at the Championships, as those were his most successful events 17 years ago.

He added: “Just as the
triple jump started on the Sunday the heavens opened. All the competitors were soaked. My first three jumps were all around the distances I’d jumped through out the year and I qualified in the top three for a further three jumps.

“Even though I was soaked I somehow managed to jump 45cm further than I’d jumped that year to move into first place. I do think that the bad weather affected the jumps of my competition.”

Ben collected the
National Championship gold in the triple jump with a leap of 11.35.
