Banchory Primary School’s Novice team recently competed in the Scottish Snow Sport Association dual Slalom competition and finished off the day as champions.
Overall Banchory had a great event - both at the qualifiers where the novice team (Rory Pritchett (9). Fraser Neilson (11), Katie Leonard (9) and Holly Broughton (10)) won all their races and narrowly beat Albyn School in the finals to win gold.
The ‘Open’ experienced team comprising of Matthew Leonard (11), Sula Munro (11), Emily Mercer (11) and Ruaridh Rogerson (9) also won their qualifier, beating Finzean Primary to take home both the gold medal and the trophy for the Aberdeen City and Shire Primary School Champions for 2015.
North East Schools were well represented with Banchory Primary and Hill of Banchory fielding six teams between them in the novice qualifiers.
Both Banchory and Finzean qualified for the finals in the ‘Open’ category.
Both teams then went to the SSSA Dual Slalom Finals at Snow Factor held on Wednesday, October 28 whereBanchory’s novices won their category (again skiing against Albyn in the finals), the school’s novices remain undefeated in all their races to date.
The experienced team finished a fantastic 6th - skiing against some very strong teams.
At the moment Banchory Primary’s novice team members don’t really train anywhere regularly but are hoping their win will inspire them to join a club and begin race training.
The experienced team contains skiers who ski with various different clubs - Sula Munro with Scottish Ski Club and ATC, Matthew Leonard with Aberdeen Snowsports Club, Glenshee Perforrmance Squad and ATC and Ruaridh Rogerson with Gordon Skiers and ATC.
Both Sula and Matthew recently attended a ski race camp during the October holidays with the Alpine Training Centre (ATC). A
TC is based in Nethybridge and is run by Sean Langmuir - the race camp was held in Hintertux, Austria.
