Scotland’s first all-female shooting club launched with a bang at the inaugural shoot of Glad Rags & Cartridge Bags at the Raemoir House Hotel.
The club, which is open to women from across Aberdeenshire, was set up by by Mhairi Morriss, director of Jomm Events, to provide a social forum for shooting ladies of all levels under the instruction of Scottish Shooting Team member and experienced instructor David Burgess and his fellow coaches.
Midmar resident Mhairi said: “Shooting is very much a male dominated sport but there’s no real reason why. We want to encourage ladies to have a go at clay pigeon shooting in a friendly and relaxed environment.”
Following a career in event organisation, including working for Drambuie Liqueur Company’s marketing team, Mhairi decided to start up a company of her own.
“For those who already shoot then we are lucky enough to have David Burgess, a top class shot and gun fitting expert on hand to take their skills to the next level. There will be opportunities to move onto game shooting if that’s what our members want.”
David Burgess is a leading instructor at corporate entertainment, celebrity and fund raising events and a personal instructor at some of the very best sporting estates in the UK. He carries out gun fitting for celebrities and members of the Great Britain Shooting Team. His success at a personal level includes winning shooting events in the UK and Europe.
The first shoot, held on a bright November morning in Deeside, saw 30 ladies enjoy a full morning’s clay shooting and tuition in Banchory, followed by lunch and giveaways from the club’s sponsors John Clark Motor Group, Orvis, Cairngorm Sporting Supplies, Jamieson & Carry, Heavenly Hampers and Trend Magazine.
A fun competition resulted in Carol Davidson of Alford winning the top gun prize of a BMW Coupe for the weekend courtesy of John Clark Motor Group.
Shot of the day was awarded to 17-year-old Amy Reid of New Deer and best novice was Vikki McRobbie of Strichen.
Glad Rags & Cartridge Bags will meet for their next shoot on January 11, 2015, at Raemoir House Hotel when country sports retailer, Orvis will be giving a masterclass in gun cleaning and maintenance.
