Ballater’s annual Highland Games will take place on Thursday, August 11, at Monaltrie Park and the organisers are hoping for record crowds.
Featuring a mixture of events including piping, dancing, track and field the Games makes for a perfect family day out and offers a once-a-year chance to witness the incredible strength of some of Scotland’s best Heavy Athletes in action in Ballater.
Sponsored by family-owned single malt, Glenfiddich, the Heavy Events comprise seven different disciplines including the spectacular caber toss. Glenfiddich began supporting the heavy athletics element of the Games over 30 years ago in 1983 and the whisky’s backing enables Ballater Games to provide prize money to attract some of Scotland’s leading athletes to take part.
Ballater Highland Games is also one the key events in the Glenfiddich Heavy Events Championship, a league of twelve events that take place throughout the summer in which athletes accrue points towards winning the overall Glenfiddich Championship titles.
Royan Graham, from The Glenfiddich Distillery said: ”Glenfiddich has been family run since it was founded by William Grant in 1886.
“Through our continuing sponsorship of Highland Games we are bringing together two of Scotland’s finest and oldest traditions, single malt Scotch whisky and Highland sports.”
Amongst the top contenders for this year’s Glenfiddich championship are last year’s winner, Lorne Colthart and 2014 champion, Craig Sinclair from Drumoak.
Events star at 11am and will continue throughout the day with tickets available at the gates .
