Following an unfortunate couple of months, Deeside Rugby club have found themselves in the posistion of urgently needing to recruit new players at 1st XV level.
Now, the club has been forced to forfeit their promotion and return to BT Caledonia League Division 2 North (East) due to the loss of 18 first team players from their squad of 30.
Deeside RFC First XV Coach Bruce Strachan said: “This situation has developed within the last 10 weeks and has got worse on a weekly basis, the main issue is players who have had to move away for work.
“These are primarily people who work in Oil & Gas or graduates getting into the work place, come October it will have risen to 9 players lost due to the downturn alone.
“We could have dealt with players moving to city clubs, although I won’t pretend that is an easy pill to swallow, but if the downturn did not happen at the same time we could have coped.
“We have also had a couple of retirements and a couple of long term minor injuries.”
Deeside will kick off their season away to Ellon on Saturday, September 3, and the club are on the hunt for new additions to bolster their playing squad.
“We’ve lost a total of 18 players from a squad of 30 and that means we have to now get people involved from Peterculter to Braemar to Alford, all the villages and farms in Deeside (Strathdee) and Strathdon.
“It would be great to get people from the community playing for a community based club, I am convinced there are people out there thinking about it.
“It is after all a great sport to play with a top notch sociable aspect.
“I find this incredibly frustrating and it is not easy to stay positive but the whole team here at Deeside Rugby are determined to keep growing and representing the local community with our heads held high.”
