Valiant Deeside battle on despite two man handicap

Deeside Rugby Club put in a brave performance in their first game of the new league season after starting the match with only 13 players.

They would go on to lose the game 48-7 to Ellon at The Meadows after doing well to lead 7-0 after Centre Martin Kennedy touched down from a kick through after 20 minutes.

The visitors were pegged back to 7-7 and managed to hold onto that score line until the 30th minute.

Injuries also meant that Deeside would finish the game with just 11 players on the park.

First XV coach Bruce Strachan reported: “The lads were at 7-7 after 30 mins with 13 players, it was however too much to handle when Deeside was reduced to 11 players.

“The pitch can seem rather big playing with four less men than your opponents.

“Ellon went through all 22 players in their squad so the lads did an amazing job to keep the points below the half century, Donald Ballantyne (First Team Manager) rates it as one of his proudest moments in Rugby.

“The fighting bother-hood spirit and willingness to play on was outstanding from every man wearing the Deeside Shirt, the physical effort to cover so much ground for 80 minutes is nothing short of outstanding.

“We have a home game this Saturday against Grammar 2nds and we simply have to get a full team on the pitch to give them a decent game.”

After losing a number of their First team squad during the summer, Deeside RFC are still looking to recruit new players at senior level.

Age and ability or experience is not a concern, if you fancy giving it a go, training is on Tuesday & Thursday night (7.00pm to 8.30pm) at Woodend Rugby Pitches.
