Phins hold off Moss

Torphins started this game well at a blustery Kinker. Despite not having played for several weeks the Phins did not look at all lethargic and were playing at a high tempo.

With only ten minutes played, Torphins took a deserved lead. WRIGHT curled a free kick into the box and with no team attacking the ball it found its way into the back of the net with Keeper totally stuck to the ground.

Minutes later it was 2 – 0. Again Wright came down the flank and going forward, Smith made a darting run to receive the ball, the attacker crossed to his team mate BROWN who rose well and looped the ball into the far corner with his head.

Travers should have scored shortly after when put through one-on-one but the top goal scorer failed to beat the keeper.

However on the stroke of half time Travers had his goal. Brown played a neat one-two with Travers before being pulled back by a defender. The free kick was right on the edge of the box and TRAVERS made no mistake in curling the ball into the top corner for 3-0.

The second half was a little more evenly matched with Muggiemoss coming more into the game.

Johnstone and Thomson were defending well in the heart of defence but could do nothing when the town side pulled a goal back on 60 minutes. A 30 yard rocket had Geddes scrambling across his goal but even at full stretch the goal keeper could do nothing to keep the ball out.

Smith was replaced by Meinen, his first appearance for the Torphins side and the attacker should have scored with his first chance. One-on-one with the goal keeper, he tried lifting the ball over the stopper but the ball just went inches over.

An injured Ewen was replaced by Gilbert, who has re-signed with the Phins Club after being absent from the end of last season.

On 80 minutes Muggiemoss further reduced the deficit by making it 3-2. A corner was swung in from the right and a powerful header was superbly touched on to the bar by the diving Geddes. As the ball came back into play it was a Moss player who reacted first to nod the ball over the line.

Gilbert had a couple of decent chances towards the end of the game to secure the points but failed to beat the goalkeeper and Torphins held on.
