Banchory manager Sandy Carrol had to contend with six absentees again for this PMAC Superleague match against Forres Thistle.
After a bright Banchory start, Forres were the first to go close on 5 minutes with an angled shot that went a foot past Chris Irvine’s far post. But within a couple of minutes Shaun Carrol forced the Forres keeper to punch over an awkward free kick.
Scott Garrett used his pace down the right to get behind the Forres defence and when he squared for Connor Scully it looked certain to be a goal but the visiting keeper blocked with his legs.
Saints were causing problems with their lead up but not quite finishing things off which was the story of the first half. Forres on the other hand seemed to get that bit closer with their chances and they almost took the lead when a free header from a free kick went well over the bar.
For the remainder of the first half Banchory had the better of possession but could not get that elusive first goal. Scully was becoming more prominent and he laid off to Garrett but the strikers effort was blocked in the six yard box and from the corner Carrol’s effort was also blocked at the back post.
At the start of the second half the heavens opened with torrential rain making the spectators run for cover, only the few brave soles remained outdoors including the unfortunate match reporter.
Forres had the first chance with the Saints defence blocking a shot inside the 6 yard box, but on 57 minutes the first goal eventually arrived. Scully picked up a long clearance on the left moved inside and laid off to the supporting Carrol who calmly picked his spot from 15 yards for his eighth goal of the season.
Almost immediately it could have been two when Cammy Gray saw his blistering 30 yard drive palmed round the post by the Forres keeper.
But on 65 minutes it was 2-0 for Banchory. Left back Josh Robertson found Scully with a sweet pass who squared for Garrett to side foot home from 8 yards.
As the rain seemed to get heavier it made things awkward for everyone. Michael Skene made a mistake to let in a Forres forward and as Irvine parried the Forres attempt Skene recovered to clear off the line.
It was 3-0 when a corner the ball broke out to Carrol who took one touch and hammered in a fierce strike that the keeper seemed to have covered but the ball fizzed off his body into the side netting to wrap up the game.
Manager Sandy Carrol was delighted that his side had got their first legue win of the season.
He said: “It was another good win for the lads. Our movement off the ball, especially in the second half was exceptional. We also defended superbly with both Michael Skene and Mark Galashan marshalling the defence.
“It will be another tough game this Saturday when we entertain Ellon at home but I am sure if we play to our potential we will get another three points and start climbing up the table.”
Next Saturday (September 17) is another league match at Milton against Ellon United, kick off 2.30pm. The following Saturday sees a change of fixture with Buchanhaven Hearts visiting for the Regional Cup 1st Round, kick off 2.15pm.
