Mintlaw Rovers 4
Deeside Football Club 5
Jake Littlejohn (2)
Kurt Grant (3)
Deeside were looking to bounce back from their narrow defeat last week against Culter and faced Mitlaw Rovers playing their first game of the season, at Stuartfield.
The game was end to end in the first 15 minutes, with both teams looking evenly matched, until Kurt Grant took the ball down the right wing, cut inside his man and fired a low shot beyond the keeper into the bottom right hand corner from the edge of the 18 yard box.
This spurred Deeside into life and on 22 mins a great ball that split the defence from Frankie McMahon was collected by Kurt Grant who again slotted it by the onrushing goalkeeper low into the bottom right hand corner.
On 26 minutes Joshua Day was adjudged to have fouled a Mintlaw player and the referee awarded a soft penalty. Mintlaw’s no 10 took the penalty well, giving Deeside Keeper Liam Cameron no chance.
From the kick off Deeside were back on the attack and another defense splitting ball from Frankie McMahon found Kurt Grant again, this time Mintlaw’s Keeper was equal to the shot.
On 31 minutes, a great bit of play involving Frankie McMahon and Fraser MacIntosh led to a dangerous cross which fell to Josh Grant who seen a great effort tipped onto the bar. From the resulting corner, Sam Gooding had a header cleared off the line and the follow up shot from Kurt Grant was again cleared off the line by the frantic Mintlaw defence.
A third Deeside goal was coming and a long ball over the top on 34 minutes from Joshua Day was collected by Jake Littlejohn who dummied the onrushing goalkeeper and cooly rolled the ball into the net.
Just before half time Mintlaw had a freee kick 20 yards out, but a good save from Liam Cameron kept the score to 1-3 at half time.
Deeside started the Second half in the same way they ended the first and a long ball through to Jake Littlejohn saw the Deeside striker flash his shot just by the post. Deeside were not going to be kept out for long and on 51 minutes a big kick out from keeper Liam Cameron was chased down by Jake Littlejohn who was too strong for the Mintlaw defender, he then proceeded to curl the ball into the top corner from the edge of the penalty box.
The wind was starting to pick up and was behind Mintlaw and in the 59th minute, Mintlaws No 8 fired a shot in from 25 yards, that gave the keeper no chance. Mintlaw’s tails were now up and they sensed a way back in, on 61 minutes a free kick was given 25 yards out and the Mintlaw No 8 curled this into the top corner.
Deeside were a bit shell shocked and on 65 minutes Mintlaw equalised, again it was the Mintlaw No 8 who picked the ball up and hit a long range shot, again giving the Deeside keepr no chance, to score his hat trick and tie the game at 4-4.
Both teams now sensed that the next goal would win this game and both had chances, until 2 minutes before the end, from a Mintlaw corner, Joel George cleared the ball to Josh Grant, who played the ball down the line to Kurt Grant who beat 2 Mintlaw defenders before slotting the ball by the Mintlaw Keeper for his hat trick.
Tempers then frayed and the Mintlaw No 8 spoiled his fantastic hat-trick by getting sent off. This allowed Deeside to see out the game and record their first ever win.
Next up are early season league leaders Midlefield wasps at Aboyne on Sunday, September 8, kick-off 12.30.
