Deeside Mini’s travelled to Inverurie on Saturday to take part in the annual Garioch RFC tournament. With full squads at P4, P5 and P7 and a part squad at P6 (who teamed up with Garioch), all the kids were in high spirits with the sunshine making for a great day.
The other teams in the competition were Garioch, Huntly, Aberdeen Wanderers, Grammar, Mackie and Ellon.
At P4, the 10 man squad played some exciting rugby and won all their pool matches bar one against a strong Grammar team who were outstanding in defence. This led to a final encounter with the same team which Grammar ran out as 4-3 winners, again proving to be too strong in defence for the Deeside team.
At P5, the 12 man squad were up for the competition that was ahead of them. Their usual slow start to a tournament was not there and they came flying out of the blocks. After winning all their pool matches, they came up against a spirited Wanderers team in the final. The Deeside boys showed a comprehensive display of rugby and ran out 8-1 winners.
At P6, the three Deeside players teamed up with the Garioch second team and bonded fantastically under the guidance of coach Kenny Smith. They only lost one pool game and drew another which proved to be too much to reach the final, but a third place was no disgrace.
At P7, again the 11 man squad were up for the challenge and after some hard fought games, missed out on the final by a couple of points. A fourth place overall was not a true reflection of the effort that all the boys exerted during the day and some injustice may have been felt by the team and coaches.
Deeside will welcome all of the teams that were at Garioch last weekend to their own tournament at their Woodend pitches in Banchory this Saturday (May 19). Play will start at 10.30am and carry on throughout the day.
This will be followed by the annual Captains v Presidents game to kick off at approx 3.30pm. All are welcome to go along and watch, or participate if the feel the urge.
