Alford Basketball Club’s senior men’s team, The Bears, began their first season in the Grampian Second Division last week away to Garioch.
Coach Robert Fletcher’s team were fired up for their first ever league game. Despite missing a couple of key players they put on a good show eventually losing 86–50. Scoring was shared with Sorley Johnston on 14, Scott Sinclair on 14 and Neil grant with 10.
On Sunday there was a good turnout amongst the spectators for the first home game against Aberdeen side Pecten. Another slow start by the home team allowed the visitors to build up an early lead. Alford rallied in the second quarter with 16 points to the visitors 20 but couldn’t sustain the effort in the second half only scoring 10 in each of the last quarters. Pecten ran out winners by 100 to 41. S. Johnston and Micahel Farqhuar were the Bears’ tops scoreers with 12 and 11 points respectively.
The team contains a good mixture of youth and experience with school age players getting plenty of court time. Club chair Sorley Johnston said: “This is a brand new team and we are up against guys who been playing together for years. We can only get better with every match. There are young players in the club who are pressing for places and I expect us to start winning games soon.”
The club has girls’ and boys’ teams from U12 up to U18. New players are always welcome. Training times are Tuesday 4 -4.45 U12 boys, 4 - 5.30pm U18 girls, 5.30 – 6.30 U12 girls then Sundays 2-4pm for U14, U16 and 18 boys and 4- 6pm for men. Come along and try it out. Last year the U12 boys won the Grampian league and the U14s were runners-up.
The club is organising a fund-raising ceilidh to the ever popular Clachan Yell in Craigievar Hall on Saturday 10th November at 7.30pm. Tickets are £12 and £10 available from Sorley Johnston on 0771 814 0695.
The Bears will be in action in Aberdeen on Sunday against the Hornets at Aberdeen Sports Village. The rest of the club teams will be in action in November in the Grampian leagues at the International School.
