Torphins duo getting to grips with car rallying

Two Deeside men have taken up fufilled a lifetime ambition by competing in car rallying.

Two years ago Torphins duo Geoff Goudie and Calum Jaffray bought a Subaru Impreza. Following a lot of work raising funds to buy various parts then actually building the car themselves, their dream has been realised and they have competed in three rallies this year.

Their first rally was at Crail in July, a single venue to gain experience and see how reliable the car was and they finished a respectable 37th place out of 57 cars.

It was then onto the Speyside Stages Forest Rally based in Elgin in August. The rally went very well for a first attempt over a forest course.

The car had developed some oil leaks and needed some other maintenance before their next rally.

Geoff and Calum entered the Colin McRae Forest Stages in Perthshire earlier this month where conditions were horrendous with endless rain, fog and thick mud.

Calum said: “Stage two almost led to us going off a couple of times and the back brakes stuck on.

“By Stage four it had led to the loss of the whole exhaust system and I think it’s still missing in the Perthshire forests!”

A finish of 42nd overall and 11th in class was achieved, which the men said was “very satisfying” considering the conditions.

The duo now plan to compete in the Scottish Championships in 2012. They would like to thank all their sponsors and those who have given them invaluable advice.
