Over 300 performers gathered at Aberdeen Music Hall last week to represent different countries at an evening of musical entertainment.
Various talented groups and soloists took to the stafe on March first for the 7th annual The 7th annual ‘Around the World in Music’ charity concert, organised by the Rotary Club of Westhill & District.
The proceedings were opened by Mr George Adam, the Lord Provost of Aberdeen, in front of a near capacity audience.
The theme for this year’s concert was the Commonwealth and this was vividly illustrated by the appearance of the Aberdeen Indian Dance Group, who were resplendent in their colourful national dress.
The wide variety of performers ranged from childrens and adults choirs, Westhill Ceilidh Band, Aberdeen City Percussion Ensemble to vocal and violin soloists.
Of the many excellent individual performances, Gregor Coumans from Hazlewood School was decribed as “quite outstanding” in his rendering of ‘There is Nothing Like a Dame’ and received enthusiastic rounds of applause from the audience.
This concert is the largest event in our Rotary year.
The two main charities to benefit from this year’s concert were the Horizon Trust and the Archie Foundation. The participating choirs will also receive a contribution from the concert proceeds.
The Horizon Trust provides maternal and child healthcare facilities and training in The Gambia on the west coast of Africa. The Archie Foundation, based in Aberdeen, provides facilities, equipment, people and training, as well as extensive support to families of sick children.
A spokesperson for the Rotary Club of Westhill & District said: “This concert is the largest event in our Rotary year and we are extremely grateful to Morag Simpson, our Musical Director for her involvement in the planning of the concert and also in her capacity of coaching most of the participants.
“President John Fraser compered the concert and carried out the duties in the most humorous and efficient manner.”
